Rasor Rants | The Box Journey Ep. 7
Now that the holidays were over, I had to think of new ways to use the box! Luckily, I had already created a list of themes in my mind before even building the box; Easter, spring, back-to-school, birthdays, Halloween, Mother’s Day…etc. It was hard to choose which theme to tackle and market first.
Having a kiddo who has a January birthday, Birthday in the box seemed like the direction to go! My 8-year-old wanted an axolotl birthday theme this year, so we picked out a few decorations. I let her fill out the template for what she wanted her composite to look like and said that we’d do a few photos that Mama needs at the end. She wanted to showcase all of her toys, specifically her American Girl Dolls and Squishmallow collection. (See her template below.)
We had brought the box home from the studio already, and the garage was far too cold to shoot in, so we moved the box into the house for this session! Once I got the lighting and tripod placement arranged, we were ready to get props involved and start our session!
We had to recruit her older sibling to help throw confetti for some of the photos! The house was a mess but the kids had a great time celebrating the life and interests of 8-year-old Natalie!
Lesson: You’ll see in one of the BTS photos that we had some axolotl graphics we had stuck on the box. They were super reflective, and no matter what I did, I could not get the reflection to go away. If you have any tips or tricks on removing the glare from shiny objects, please reach out! For this session, I just took them off, and we moved on! Sometimes you just have to pivot.
